Wallace 5.0 out of 5 stars They're exactly what you want for NAS use. They're very well built and full-featured. Installation can be a bit of a chore, as mentioned in another review. You have to bend them out of the way in order to slide in this 5-in-3 drive rack. A couple of twists of the clamp's screw and a rail will lay flat. Done. The fan is a bit noisy, but it does move a lot of air. The plastic fan housing unsnaps from the rack very easily allowing you to change the fan, if you wish, without any problem. I typically replace it (in the housing) with an Antec TriCool 92mm fan, then snap the housing back onto the rack. If you leave off the fan, or plug it into a separate speed controller, you need to change a jumper to turn off the disconnected-fan alarm - all jumpers are detailed in the instructions. Power is provided by a pair of 4-pin Molex connectors (mounted on the rack). As expected, you'll need a separate SATA cable (included) for each of the 5 drive slots.http://alliance-ltd.com/userfiles/10a-esc-manual.xml

cse-m35t-1b manual.

I've never had a failure in any of my 9 racks. I don't switch out drives often, but each time I slide one in, the connection feels smooth and secure. I don't expect to have any problems in the future with any of them. This rack is a quality product and is an excellent way to increase the quantity of drives in your system. By the way, you'll probably need a SATA expansion card, too. This Supermicro 5-bay rack is a solid piece of hardware. The unit comes with all the cables and hardware you will need to get it up and running easily. The 5 trays have plastic cup-like dishes in them to add support in case you aren't filling all the bays. The rails on each side are metal and fit snug against the drive leaving solid contact. The unit takes up three bays in your case but you need to be aware of your case and its rails system. With the tabs in place, you cannot slide the rack into the case. I knew this going into the purchase so I simply used some pliers to bend the tabs flat.Once I did that, the rack fit into the case perfect. It's heavy, so if you have a unstable case or a cat that likes to jump up onto your computer, you might want to mount this lower to the floor. You also need to be aware of the rack's depth. It comes with a 92mm (Sanyo) fan enclosure on the back and it can stick out into the case a decent amount depending on your case, so measure first before buying this rack. On to the fan. The fan is subjectively loud compared to what I'm used to in my other computers. I can hear the fan from downstairs. However, the fan does a good job at keeping all five of my Samsung EcoGreen F2 HD154UI 1.5TB drives at roughly 25-27 degrees Celsius. I do plan on trying another fan to reduce the noise a bit because I plan on eventually having three of these racks in my case for a total of 15 drives.http://drvipinmishra.com/userfiles/10bii-calc-hd-manual.xml

The rack also has a loud alarm that will siren if the fan dies or if your drives pass the threshold of a designated temperature which is adjustable via jumpers on the back of the rack backplane. So far I've build a NAS with the 5 drives in a software-based RAID 5 using OpenFiler. The rack has no bearing on performance so there isn't much to say about that. The drives hot swap very easily and the activity lights work fine without the included activity light cable connected to the motherboard. I rated this rack a 4 out of 5 stars for one simple feature that I think could be improved on. The drive carrier bays slide the drive right into the SATA and power ports each time you insert or remove the drive bay. There are other products out there that use a method that won't put stress on the actual sata and power on the back of the drive. This would add complexity and cost but I think it's a valuable feature that Supermicro could enhance. I've had no issues with damaged drives, but I wouldn't want to swap them in and out frequently.then of course that's not really what it's meant for anyway. I would recommend this to a friend and a random Amazon stranger.Warning: If you are installing it with a separate fan (and so not using the included one), be sure to change the default jumper setting (see the manual) - otherwise you'll get a screeching boot alarm that will scare the hell out of your cats.It is very reasonably priced compared to the competition, and comes from a proven server manufacturer (Super Micro). For home use, I would recommend picking up a quiet 90mm fan. I actually ham-fist installed a 80mm Panaflo fan with some zipties, and it has been working fine. I tried running the drive cage without a fan for a bit, and found that it has a very loud alarm for fan failure, and temperature overrun (a good thing, and both alarms can be disabled via jumpers). The drive cage is black (not white as shown in the Amazon picture) and has a cool enterprise storage look to it.

I'm using two of these in my unraid box and they perform flawlessly. The fans aren't too loud, and they keep the drives at low temperatures. The build is excellent, everything fits well, and is an amazing space saver (where you'd normally only fit a few drives, you now fit five). It has worked flawlessly for over 2 years. SM Technical SupportI had to replace it with an ultra quiet fan. Now it's perfect!Great for upgrading. I don't have to take apart my PC to change out a hard drive. It has blank trays for the hot swap brackets that make a nice screw tray for when I work on computers. It's really nice to see individual hdd lights working independent of each other. Others I've tried have either had just one led for all drives, or all leds lit up at the same time. Even had one that just strobed all leds simultaneously as the drives were being randomly accessed. This one has held up longer than any other so far. 9-months, not a single issue.Removal of the drives from the bays and direct connection with the same configuration and same test sees no such slowdown. I suspect the power from 2 molex is insufficient to power the drives simultaneously.I really wish they worked.Supermicro support is mediocre at best.Well built (in concept)I cancelled it and then isolated some drives with passthrough to the OS. Several SATAII drives were transferring 10-15MBps. Tried it again, and then the drive failure lights came on!It seems there are drive seating problems. Additionally SM hasn't updated this enclosure significantly from what I can tell in several years.

There's no mention whether SATA II (let alone III) truly work.Easily replaceable with inexpensive ones (fans do wear out!) - Fan Alarm (Configurable) - Holds 5 Drives in 3 x 5.25 slots - Very Robust design, I've been using it for over a year (2 years) and have since bought a second - Great Price! It was not difficult, this is also clearly necessary to hold 5 drives in 3 x 5.25 inch bays, 4 drives in 3 bays do not requires this though - Drives require drive sleds and screws (included). There are 4 drive backplanes that don't - Fairly deep, do measurements in your case first.I currently have 2 of these in the case holding 9 drives. I previously had a 4 drive in 3 bay in there, but the vibrations were killing drives. This thing is solid as a brick and very quiet with the 90mm fan. The only downside is that guide rails might need to be bent to get it in, it just cant be helped to have 5 drives in 3 bays instead of 4. If you don't mind bending some guide rails (not hard), possibly replacing the fan (easy and cheap to do), and the depth wont give you issues in your case, this is simply the best product of its kind out there, especially for the money. After extensive testing both on my own and with Supermicro support, I found that the problem with my backplane was that the drives themselves were not being inserted enough onto the backplane connectors. To verify this, I removed a drive from the hot-swap tray and seated it fully on the backplane connector. This took some propping and supporting of the drive, but the drives performed flawlessly when installed this way. As soon as the drive is installed in the tray, the errors came back. Performed this test over and over with repeatable results. Supermicro tech support was not very helpful, and because I didn't find this problem until after the return period had expired with newegg, there was no returning them.Something as simple as the tolerances in the drive to the backplane make this product a huge failure.

Hot swapping works fine. This drive enclosure requires the support tabs in the chassis drive bays to be bent down because the sides of the enclosure have no indentions to allow for the tabs. Even with the tabs bent down or removed, the drive enclosure is a hair too big so it is a very tight fit. The fan is quite loud and doesn't seem to change speed based on drive temp. I'm going to have to find a much quieter fan.Click here for more details. Secure shopping made faster. Check out with PayPal. However, the tech could not tell me (refused to tell me?) if both molex connectors are used to power the backplane and the fan is connected separately, or if one is for the backplane and one for the fan, or how these are powered. The manual shows the fan as having a three pin input on the backplane, but the fan sold by itself seems to have an LP4 (molexish) power connector, and the technician confirms that the fan uses an LP4 connector for powe (in which case, it isn't powered directly off the backplane like he ALSO claimed, now is it?). In that case, then what's the 3-pin connector for. When I asked the technician about how the fan was connected to the backplane so I would know which splitters I would need to buy, I was told that the fan was permanently attached to the backplane and was not removable, and therefore no controller could be connected. I, rather exasperated at this point, pointed out that the manual showed instructions to remove the fan in order to access backplane jumpers and ports, and the technician claimed that no, in fact, it could NOT be removed without destroying the backplane. It is attached to the plastic piece on the back, but is removable by pressing the tabs. This left me quite confused as to why there was a 3-pin fan connector on the backplane in the manual. It seems more and more likely (and thanks for confirming) that they're actually 3-pin connections. And the manual clearly shows they're removable (as you also confirm) so the tech must have been mistaken, unless they're radically changed their design. I replaced the original fan (brand new 5-bay unit) with this one (Scythe KAMA FLEX SA0925FDB12L 92mm Case Fan). The three pins on the Scythe fan seem to work perfectly though - I did not need to change any jumper on the backplane.
